KREO is a network of the regions Karlsruhe/Pforzheim (DE), Rhône-Alpes (FR), Emilia-Romagna (I) and Oxfordshire (UK) which was created in the framework of the PAXIS programme (Pilot Action of Excellence on Innovative Start-ups - RP5, INNOVATION-SME) with the aim of starting a transnational experience exchange.

In the framework of the project, the region of Karlsruhe was awarded twice by the EC with the “Award of Excellence for Innovative Regions” (2000 and 2002) and once with the “Award of Excellence in Innovation Transfer” (2004). This highlights that the region has developed a target-oriented cooperation and innovation culture between SMEs and prestigious academic institutions as well as research institutions.
